Yisrael Beytenu Backs Likud Candidate For JSC, National Unity Votes Against

ISRAEL

Several opposition leaders have unveiled the voting intentions of their respective parties as the Knesset decides whether to approve Likud MK Tally Gotliv and Yesh Atid MK Karine Elharrar as its representatives in the Judicial Selection Committee.

  • Avigdor Liberman’s Yisrael Beytenu said that it will vote in favour of Likud's candidate in a bid to sink Prime Minister Netanyahu's plan to reject both candidates. Benny Gantz's National Unity said it would only back Karine Elharrar, which raises the bar for any potential Likud defectors to push Gotliv's nomination through.
  • A source told the Times of Israel that parliamentary bylaws permit a situation whereby only one candidate would be elected today and the second vacancy would be filled 30 days later, which leaves the doors open to the election of zero, one or two candidates today.
  • PM Netanyahu doubled down on an earlier plea issued by fellow coalition chiefs calling on the opposition not to pull out of the judicial overhaul talks. The statement from coalition heads blamed the current situation on Likud MK Tally Gotliv, who refused to drop her candidacy.
