Zelenskyy Advisor Rejects Putin Call For Christmas Truce

UKRAINE

RTRS carrying comments from an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy regarding the 'Christmas truce' ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin for 6-7 Jan. Says that, "Russia must leave Ukrainian territory it occupies, only then will it have a 'temporary truce"."

  • Adviser says that Putin can "keep hypocrisy to yourself". As noted in previous bullet (see 1516GMT bullet), many in Ukraine do not celebrate Christmas on the Russian Orthodox date of 7 Jan, but instead on 25 Dec.
  • Despite the call for a truce, there remains no guarantee that it will be observed by the Russian side. Zelenskyy's office called a plea from Patriarch Kirill (a staunch supporter of Russia's invasion) for a truce, "a cynical trap and an element of propaganda".
