Zelenskyy: This Is A Victory For Ukraine And All Of Europe

UKRAINE

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has stated on X that the European Council decision to open EU accession negotiations for Ukraine is "a victory for Ukraine. A victory for all of Europe. A victory that motivates, inspires, and strengthens."

  • The decision, which was announced by European Council President Charles Michel a short time ago, broadsided European insiders who expected a protracted struggle to overcome a veto from Hungary.
  • The accession process will likely be drawn out, and faces an unclear track considering complications from the war ongoing with Russia. For reference, Croatia, the most recent addition to the bloc, took 10 years to complete the application process.
  • Bloomberg notes: "While Kyiv still faces hurdles in clinching funding from both the EU and US, the country’s progress on joining the bloc will at least boost morale as it seeks to fight off Russia’s invasion."
  • Moldovan President Maia Sandu, whose country was also admitted to negotiations, said: "Moldova is ready to rise to challenge, we're committed to hard work needed."
