Zemmour Convicted Of Hate Speech, Must Pay EUR10k Or Face Prison

FRANCE

Far-right presidential candidate Eric Zemmour has been convicted of inciting racial hatred by a court in Paris. The judgement comes after Zemmour made controversial comments about unaccompanied migrant children. Zemmour must pay a fine of EUR10,000 or face a prison term.

  • Zemmour denounced the judgement as "an ideological and stupid condemnation" and stated that he would appeal the decision.
  • Following a surge in opinion polling support in the autumn of 2021, Zemmour's polling has declined notably to the point where he now consistently sits in fourth place in first round polls behind the incumbent Emmanuel Macron, centre-right Les Republicains nominee Valerie Pecresse, and right-wing Rassemblement National leader Marine Le Pen.
