Biden: 'I Feel Good About Macron Re-Election'

  • Says that he 'feels good' about the re-election of French President Emmanuel Macron. Says that he tried to call him last night but Macron "was at the Eiffel Tower having a good time." The two will talk later today.
  • Macron's re-election will undoubtedly come as a major relief to the Biden administration. Alongside the UK, France is another major defence contributor to NATO and is seen as an important actor in the effort to bolster Ukrainian military supplies in its fight against Russia. The perception of links between Macron's opponent Marine Le Pen and the Russian state had raised concerns that should Le Pen win, the flow of France's military aid to Ukraine would be swiftly halted.
  • Biden says that the trip to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv by Secretaries of State and Defense Anthony Blinken and Lloyd Austin III 'went good', but that he has not spoken to either of them directly yet following the visit.
