Moldova Pres: We Will Take All Measures To Avoid Escalation

Wires and social media reporting comments from Moldovan President Maia Sandu. Moldova has become a focal point of international focus in the past day following a series of explosions in the breakaway region of Transnistria.

  • Sandu condemned 'any attempts to disturb peace in Moldova'. Says that Moldova will take all measures to avoid escalation. Adds that ”(The situation in Transnistria) puts the Republic of Moldova at risk”.
  • Says that according to the information her gov't has, the attacks were carried out by forces within the region.
  • Comes after ameeting of the Moldovan national security council. The council agreed to raise Moldova's level of readiness to its highest level and strengthen the security of public institutions including those for ensuring public order.
  • Proximity of Moldova to NATO members such as Romania, and the presence of around 1,300-1,500 Russian troops in Transnistria means the small eastern European nation will garner significant geopolitical focus. Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine there have been concerns in Chisinau and the West that Russia will seek to take all Ukrainian territory on the Black Sea, creating a land bridge between Russia and Transnistria.
