Xi Jinping To Make First Trip Outside Mainland China In 893 Days Tomorrow

CHINA

Chinese President is due to make his first trip outside mainland China in 893 days tomorrow when he visits Hong Kong for a ceremony marking 25 years of Chinese rule over the former British territory.

  • The trip comes as the Chinese premier appears increasingly isolated by his "zero-Covid" policy and the US-led western alliance firms up support in Asia-Pacific.
  • According to Bloomberg, Xi will stay the night in adjacent Shenzen.
  • There have been a significant restrictions placed on foreign media covering the event. The Inquirer writes: "Journalists from more than seven organizations, including Reuters, have been blocked from covering official ceremonies..."
  • Dongshu Liu said: “Staying at home has affected Xi Jinping’s international influence, although he tries to mitigate that impact by attending events virtually."
