A fifth of firms anticipate new orders decline - Chicago BB

US DATA
MNI (London)

The second Chicago PMI special question asked "To what extent do you see new orders growing in the next six months?"

  • The majority of firms were anticipating moderate growth (35.7%), whilst 23.8% were expecting little growth. 19.1% of respondents saw unchanged new order growth over the next six months, whilst over one fifth (21.4%) were preparing for a small decline.
  • The August survey saw a recovery in new orders, reversing the June/July dive, however, outlooks remain muted in the manufacturing industry. The ISM manufacturing report on business confirmed a division of expectations.
  • US July factory orders are due on Friday and are anticipated to see modest 0.2% m/m growth, following the strong June +2.0% m/m growth.
  • Looking forward, the decrease in global commodity prices will improve profitability for firms, however, with economic uncertainty remaining high this will likely do little to reinvigorate demand.
