10:00ET 15:00 GMT: US President Joe Biden will hold a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to discuss the latest developments regarding Russia and Ukraine.

  • The call follows a diplomatic summit in Turkey today between Russian Foreign Minster Sergei Lavrov and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba which failed to deliver substantive progress towards a ceasefire. Lavrov stated that ceasefire talks will continue to take place in Belarus according to the format which has engaged in three rounds of talks so far.
  • Erdgoan is consider the most likely NATO leader to have carry diplomatic weight with Russian President Vladimir Putin as the two have had a historically strong relationship.
  • Turkey and Russia have collaborated closely on defence, particularly in the Turkish purchase of a Russian s-400 defence system, a move which was critised by NATO.
  • The 2020 war in Nagorno-Karabakh destabilised the relationship between Putin and Erdogan and many in Russia perceived that the joint military operation between Turkey and Azerbaijan was a Turkish projection of power into the South Caucasus which is considered by the Kremlin to be part of the Russian sphere of influence.
