1922 Chair Brady: Candidates For PM Will Need At Least 100 Nominations

UK

Chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative Party backbenchers Sir Graham Brady has outlined the parameters for selection of the next UK Prime Minister.

  • Brady: "Candidates will need at least 100 nominations."
  • "We will conduct whatever ballots needed on Monday."
  • "It is up to MPs whether we have one or two candidates to put to membership [...] If the party decides to put two candidates to membership it will be put to an online vote."
  • "All stages [of the process] to be concluded no later than October 28."
  • There has been some speculation today that the online voting system availiable to the Conservative Party is not sufficiently secure to rule out interference from international actors. In response, Conservative Party Chairman Jake Berry said that he is satisfied that the voting system will be secure.
  • It is clear that the Tory party is looking to minimise the risk of a protracted leadership contest. The summer Tory leadership contest had a 20-vote threshold for nomination and threw up eight candidates.
  • Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt seen as the most likely candidates to reach a final members vote.
