1News Kantar Public Poll Shows National/ACT Could Team Up To Form Gov't

NEW ZEALAND

New Zealand's main opposition National Party could work with ACT to form a government if a general election was held today, the latest 1News Kantar Public Poll showed.

  • Despite losing 2pp, the Nationals hold the lead at 37%. Their leader Christopher Luxon remains second in the contest for most preferred Prime Minister, even as a 3pp drop brought his score to 22%.
  • ACT has replaced the Greens as the third most popular party in New Zealand as a 4pp upswing took its support to 11%. The Green Party lost 1pp and would be picked by 9% of voters.
  • The ruling Labour Party and its leader Jacinda Ardern continue to bleed support. Labour trails the National Party with 33% (down 2pp), its worst result in five years.
  • Ardern still tops the ranking of most preferred candidates for Prime Minister as 30% of respondents named her as their most preferred Prime Minister (down 3pp).
  • The authors of the survey suggest that if a general election was held today, the National/ACT could form a coalition government commanding 62 seats in the 120-strong parliament.
