EU: A big day for Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as she is set to
publicly outline the Commission's plan for a new long-term budget (the
'multiannual financial framework', MFF), which is set to include substantial
measures to prop up the European economy in the wake of COVID-19.
- At 1330CET (1230BST, 0730ET) VdL will deliver a speech to the European
Parliament outlining the plan. Prior to this, the permanent representatives from
each of the 27 member states have been briefed on the plan at the Coreper II
meeting held at 1000CET (0900BST, 0400ET).
- Following this, VdL will hold a press conference. Scheduled for 1530CET
(1430BST, 0930ET), but there is a notable chance of delay should MEP's questions
run over.
- Parliament President David Sassoli will then hold his own press conference at
1700CET (1600BST, 1100ET).
- The response to the new MFF (and should it be attached to VdL's plan, the
Franco-German E.500bn recovery fund) from the 'frugal four' countries opposed to
EU debt mutualisation will be crucial.
