US
US: A difficult night for President Donald Trump's Republican Party as it loses
the governorship of Kentucky and both houses of the General Assembly of
Virginia.
- Democrat Andy Beshear, son of two-term Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear - has
claimed the Kentucky governorship by a margin of around 0.4% over Republican
incumbent Matt Bevin. Trump has campaigned heavily for Bevin in the run-up.
- For the first time in over 20 years both houses of the Virginian General
Assembly are under the control of the Democrats in a shock result.
- While state-level contests often have their own idiosyncrasies, results will
come as a disappointment to Trump's administration. Kentucky is usually a
reliably red state in presidential elections, but Virginia - previously 'purple'
(a toss up between Republican red and Democrat blue) - is now trending
increasingly into the blue state category having voted Democratic in the last 3
presidential elections.
- Virginia one of the delegate-heavy states in the electoral college that
Democrats will be relying on in 2020 presidential election.
