Acting PM Sanchez Wants Investiture Vote ASAP, 'Talks Will Be Complex'

SPAIN

Spain's Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has stated that he would like his investiture vote in the Congress of Deputies to take place as soon as possible, but that "talks will be complex". Claims that he will seek a majority "not just for the investiture, but for the gov't term".

  • Following the failure of centre-right Popular Party (PP) head Alberto Núñez Feijóo to win either of his investiture votes last week, King Felipe VI invited Sanchez to seek to form a gov't.
  • Last week the Catalan parliament passed a motion calling for deputies from the pro-independence Junts and ERC to withhold support from Sanchez in an investiture vote unless he lays out a path to a legal independence referendum. Without both parties' support Sanchez will not win an investiture vote. However, formalising a path to a referendum is a red line for many in the PM's centre-left PSOE, risking internal divisions.
  • Each day that passes without an investiture vote takes Spain closer to a snap general election. Sanchez has until 27 November to win an investiture vote or parliament will be dissolved, with snap elections taking place within 43 days.
