Administration Denies Scholz Snub

Hans von der Burchard at Politico tweets: "White House issued strong denial of the media report. Said Scholz & Biden will meet next month. “This report is false. It did not happen — totally made up. German side has proposed dates & we are responding to them. We look forward to welcoming Scholz in the U.S. in Feb."

  • Comes after Der Spiegel reported earlier today that German Chancellor Olaf Scholz had 'snubbed' Biden by rejecting a late-notice invitation to the White House this week to discuss the Ukraine/Russia situation.
  • US is treading a fine line with regards to German relations. White House has been a vocal opponent of the Nord Stream II gas pipeline and there remains major resentment towards Berlin not 'pulling its weight' on defence spending. However, US also wants to ensure Germany remains a close ally and as Atlanticist as possible at a time when a new gov't is bedding in formed of parties usually less inclined to naturally supporting US policy.
