Advantage Macron As Melenchon Voters Favour Centrist Over Le Pen: Poll

FRANCE

Latest polling from Odoxa shows President Emmanuel Macron in a relatively strong position ahead of the second round run-off vote on 24 April. Macron leads right-wing Rassembelement National leader Marine Le Pen by 54.5% to 45.5%, a sizeable but not insurmountable advantage.

  • The more heartening data for the Macron team will come in the polling showing the potential break of votes from those who supported other candidates in the first round on 10 April.
  • The split of voters who opted for far-left candidate Jean-Luc Melenchon in the first round is the most important, given that he carried a substantial 22% of the electorate. Of those who voted for Melenchon, 32% will cast a ballot for Macron, while 22% will for Le Pen.
  • Supporters of other leftist, centrist, green, and centre-right candidates (who all performed particularly poorly in the first round) will alos back Macron by substantial margins according to the poll.
  • The only group of voters opting for Le Pen over Macron are those who supported Eric Zemmour in the first round. However, given he marshalled just 7.1% of the vote is is unlikely that this cohort could turn the tide in Le Pen's favour.
