GILT SUMMARY
GILT SUMMARY: Ahead of a set of parliamentary votes this week in which the House
of Commons could secure more control over the Brexit process, beleaguered PM
Theresa May being urged by Conservative eurosceptics to secure changes on the
Irish backstop
- Conservative backbencher Graham Brady has tabled an amendment for Tuesday
which seeks to replace the backstop with "alternative arrangements". At the same
time, Labour MP Yvette Cooper is pushing for the Brexit deadline to be extended
if no consensus emerges in parliament.
- The issue of finding a parliamentary majority for a chosen Brexit path still
appears to be an intractable problem and one unlikely to be resolved by the
votes taking place this week in the HoC.
- The difficulty in interpreting political outcomes has anchored gilts to a
tight trading range. Current yield levels: 2-year 0.798% 10-year 1.318%, 30-year
1.802%.
- Short sterling futures are 0.5-1.0 ticks higher in whites/reds, down 0.5 ticks
in greens/blues.
