Ambassadors Summoned as Orban’s Weekend Speech Leaves Diplomatic Wake

HUNGARY
  • Regional discomfort with Orban’s weekend speech in Romania continues to spread, with the Hungarian ambassadors based in both Bucharest and Bratislava summoned by the Romanian and Slovakian governments to explain Orban’s comments on ‘breakaway territories’ across other countries that he deems Hungarian in nature. In response to the summoning, foreign minister Szijjarto stated Hungary wants co-operation with Romania based on mutual respect.
  • Average gross wages data released this morning came in ahead of expectations: 18.2% Y/Y vs. Exp. 16.4%. Marks the fastest pace of wage gains since early 2022.
  • The finance ministry confirmed that the June budget deficit touched HUF 133bln, the smallest June deficit since 2014. Local press flagged the risk from plunging retail sales leaving a sizeable gap in tax revenues – raising concern that the government could miss their 3.9% deficit target this year.
  • The NBH decision is due at 1300BST/0800ET.
