US: American Voters Unconvinced By Canada/Mexico Tariffs, YouGov

US

A new survey from YouGovshows that Americans are tepid on President Donald Trump’s floated plan to impose a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. The survey data, which backs up a string of other reports showing voters are lukewarm on tariffs, suggests that Trump may have to expend significant political capital to push through hardline policy on America’s closest trade partners.

  • In a list of 20 Trump policies, Mexican/Canadian tariffs is the third-least popular, with 46% of respondents ‘strongly or somewhat’ opposing. The tariff proposal is deeply polarising, with 65% of Republicans supporting the measures compared with only 7% of Democrats.
