AMLO Names New Energy Minister, Yorio Testifies

  • President AMLO has appointed Miguel Angel Maciel Torres as the new Energy Minister. He previously held the role of deputy oil minister, and has proven his “convictions in support of our national sovereignty,” Lopez Obrador said in a message on X. For reference, the former minister, Rocío Nahle, resigned the post last week as she prepares a run for governor of Veracruz state.
  • Claudia Sheinbaum, the current frontrunner for next year’s presidential election has been ordered by Mexico’s electoral regulator to suspend a political tour for allegedly violating campaign laws and will only be allowed to hold private events. Mexico’s electoral law prevents the start of the official campaigning period until March.
  • On Tuesday, Deputy Finance Minister Gabriel Yorio is scheduled to testify before the lower house finance committee, which commences hearings on the 2024 budget.
