ANC Loses Parliamentary Majority, Coalition Talks Begin

SOUTH AFRICA
  • The official vote count confirmed that the African National Congress (ANC) captured just 40% of all votes and claimed 159 seats in the 400-member National Assembly, which was its worst election result in the post-Apartheid era. Most of the seats lost by the ANC went to ex-President Jacob Zuma's newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party, which finished the race in the third place. ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula said that "we are talking to everybody" and will consider all scenarios, including a snap election, but will not yield to demands by other party leaders that President Cyril Ramaphosa resigns.
  • TimesLive reported that calls for Ramaphosa's resignation might be part of a larger ploy involving senior ANC figures who want to stop Ramaphosa from serving another term as head of state. News24 reported that the ANC's National Executive Committee (NEC) will meet on Tuesday to discuss election results, which may include a debate on Ramaphosa's fate.
  • South Africa's May Absa Manufacturing PMI will be released at 10:00BST/11:00SAST.
