ANC Scandal Report Due Today, But Delays Possible

SOUTH AFRICA
  • Today marks the deadline at which, the ANC’s integrity commission report on the findings from their Phala Phala scandal inquiry.
  • Calls had grown for the President to take a leave of absence during the investigation, but this had been blocked by the wing of the ANC traditionally allied with Ramaphosa. While the report is due today, it’s possible it may be delayed, with M&G reporting this morning that the report has not been signed off yet.
  • This is the first in a series of tough days for the President, with Nov 15th marking the publication of branch nominations for the ANC’s elective conference (key to Ramaphosa’s re-election chances). This is followed by the recommendation made to the National Assembly by an independent panel on whether sufficient evidence exists to proceed with the Section 89 impeachment process. The deadline here is Nov 16th.
  • No key data due Friday, with focus on the possible release of the ANC integrity report. ZAR remains stronger early Friday, with USD/ZAR narrowing in on the 100-dma of 17.3067 and printing multi-month lows ahead of the Friday session.
  • Price action has been bolstered by the confirmed receipt of climate loans, which the finance minister stated were secured at a fraction of market rates and will push down future borrowing costs.
