ANC Under Pressure Ahead Of Elections, Ramaphosa To Deliver SONA On Thursday

SOUTH AFRICA
  • A new opinion poll confirmed the decline in support for the ruling African National Congress (ANC), albeit no clear successor has emerged. It showed that if an election was held today, the ANC would garner around 39% of the vote, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) sitting on 19% and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) coming third with 15%.Unemployment topped the list of the most important issues for respondents by a long shot. Separately, a median estimate of support for the ANC in Bloomberg's poll of analysts was 48%, with just two out of 14 expecting the party to garner more than 50% of the vote in this year's general election.
  • Local media outlets report that the ANC is trying to convince its former leader Thabo Mbeki to help campaign for the party ahead of the upcoming elections. This comes after the ANC suspended another former leader Jacob Zuma, who has endorsed the newly founded uMkohonto weSizwe (MK) party.
  • Looking ahead, President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday at 17:00GMT/19:00SAST and may reveal the date for national and provincial elections.
  • South Africa's S&P Global PMI improved slightly to 49.2 in January from 49.0 prior.
