Andersson Confirmed As New PM In Tight Parliamentary Vote

SWEDEN

Former finance minister Magdalena Andersson has been confirmed as Sweden's new prime minister following a close confidence vote in the Riksdag (parliament). 117 representatives voted in favour of Andersson, with 174 against and 58 abstaining.

  • With 349 members of parliament in total, 175 members voting against Andersson would have constituted a majority, denying her the position.
  • Andersson's centre-left Social Democrats are set to continue in a minority coalition alongside the environmentalist Greens. This gov't will be propped up in a confidence and supply agreement with the agrarian Centre Party and the socialist Left Party, and a single independent MP. Given that this broad group only has a majority of one, there remains the possibility of a gov't collapse and a snap election before the next one is due in Sep 2022.
