ANO Leads In Latest Opinion Poll, Czech Retail Sales Remain In Contraction

  • A February election model by Median agency showed that if a general election was held today, seven political parties and movements would enter the Chamber of Deputies, while the ANO party would win a plurality of votes. The survey suggested that former Prime Minister Andrej Babis' party could win 32% of the vote, followed by the ODS (14.5%), the Pirates (11.5%) and the SPD (9.5%). The current ruling coalition could win a combined support of 41.5% of Czech voters.
  • President Petr Pavel expressed scepticism about the effectiveness of the Visegrad Four (V4) group, which he sees more as a consultation forum rather than a platform to coordinate the details of foreign and security policies. He made these comments during a visit to Slovakia, where he agreed with President Zuzana Caputova to consider the idea of holding joint foreign trips, which could involve a visit to Kyiv.
  • Czechia's retail sales ex auto shrank 7.7% Y/Y in January versus the revised 8.1% contraction in December, with consensus expecting a steeper decline of 7.9%.
