Approval For Kishida Cabinet Rises Despite Confusion Over Border Measures

The approval rating of the Kishida Cabinet rose 6pp to 62% in the latest Yomiuri poll, while the disapproval rating fell 7pp to 22%. As many as 89% of respondents expressed support for the recent tightening of border restrictions, despite initial confusion surrounding the government's U-turn on suspending reservations for all inbound international flights.

  • Approval of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party edged higher to 41%, while Nippol Ishin no Kai moved into the second place with 8%. The Constitutional Democratic Party scored 7%.
  • Note that Japan's parliament will begin an extraordinary session today to discuss a new supplementary budget and the government's response to the Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus.
