Approval Of Party Leaders Down, Labor Increases Lead

AUSTRALIA

The two-party preferred split in the latest Newspoll for The Australian has widened to 56% to 44% in favour of the incumbent Labor Party from 55:45 in the early April poll. This is still below September’s peak of 57:43. But voters are less impressed with both leaders as their approval ratings have dropped to their lowest since the May 2022 election.

  • There was no change in the primary vote polled at 38% for Labor and 33% for the Coalition but support for the Greens rose 1pp to 11% and One Nation fell 1pp to 7%. Support for minor parties and independents was stable at 11%, which is down 3.5pp on the last election.
  • PM Albanese’s approval rating fell 3pp to 53% and opposition leader Dutton’s was down 2pp to 33%, as the debate over the upcoming Voice referendum has heated up. In terms of preferred PM, Albanese dropped 4pp to 54% while Dutton remains well behind even though he rose 2pp to 28%.
