CANADA DATA: April payroll employment -1.84M, or -11.4%. Decline is similar to
-11.0% recorded in the earlier Labour Force Survey (LFS), which was followed by
surprise +290K in May LFS.
*Payrolls were -16.3% from Feb-Apr, similar to LFS -15.7% over same period,
Statistics Canada said Thursday.
*Agency sees "Notable employment declines in export-dependent subsectors" in
coming months, based on recent trade data.
*Average weekly earnings +6.1% MOM, +9.1% YOY. Reflects disproportionate job
losses among lower-paid hourly workers. Total weekly payroll -6.0% in April, and
-11.1% since Feb.
*"Total hours worked fell 8.0% in April, bringing the total decline since
February to 15.1%. At the same time, average weekly hours worked rebounded in
April (+1.2 hours) following a decline in March (-0.6 hours), bringing the
average to 33.6 hours per week. This was largely due to the remaining hourly
paid employees in April working more hours per week on average (31.2 hours, up
from 29.6 in March)."
