Asia's LNG Imports Increase in August Driven by Japan and S Korea

LNG

LNG imports to Asia are expected up to the most since January at 22.86m metric tons for August according to Kpler data. The increase is largely driven by Japan and South Korea as they seek to fill storages ahead of the winter demand peak according to Reuters.

  • Imports were down from 21.61m metric tons in July and the highest since 23.37m in January.
  • Japan is set to import 5.56m metric tons of LNG in August, up from 5.09m in July. South Korea is set to import 3.64m in August.
  • LNG imports however continuing to decline to an estimated 8.2m metric tons in August down from 8.78m in July and the weakest since November 2021 according to Kpler due to high gas storage and structurally lowering gas demand.
