Assad's Arab League Invite Another Sign Of Waning US Influence

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has confirmed that he has received an invite to the next Arab League summit in Jeddah from King Salman bin Abdulaziz of Saudi Arabia. The confirmation of an invite comes days after Syria's official re-admittance into the Arab League, an important regional organisation alongside the GCC. Syria's reinstatement comes in spite of objections from the US and UK and comes as another signal of the waning influence of Washington, D.C., on the politics of the Middle East.

  • The rapprochement between Saudi Arabia and Iran, brokered by China, was the clearest sign of how erstwhile US allies feel more comfortable making geopolitical moves without the input of the US. Saudi Arabia will also reopen its diplomatic mission to Syria, 12 years after relations were suspended in the wake of the crackdown on civilian protest that led to the Syrian Civil War.
