Asset Managers Extend Overall Long Position, Hedge Funds Add To Shorts

The latest CFTC CoT extended on the recent positioning themes as asset managers continued to add to net longs, while hedge funds added to net shorts.

  • Hedge fund net positioning in TU, FV, UXY & US futures sits at the shortest on record.
  • Asset managers added to net long positioning in most contracts, but trimmed longs in both US & WN futures.
  • Overall, there was a mix of a reduction of and extensions to existing shorts, although non-commercial positioning remained net short across the curve.
  • The period covered the lower-than-expected weekly jobless claims data seen on August 8 and softer-than-expected PPI data.
  • The period also saw an unwind of some of the early August risk-off dovish Fed repricing.
