Babis Takes Lead In Presidential Race Polling, Could Struggle In Run-off

CZECHIA

Former Prime Minister and ANO leader Andrej Babis would win the first round of the presidential election if it was held today, proceeding to a run-off with retired army general Petr Pavel, according to an Ipsos model.

  • The survey put Babis on 29.7% with Pavel in second place with 25.3% and economist Danuse Nerudova coming third with 25.0%. The rest of the candidates polled in the low single digits and are not seen as standing any chance to mount a serious challenge to the leading trio.
  • "Less educated and older people tend to support Andrej Babis. For the oldest generation, i.e. people who are 66 years old and above, support for Babis reaches almost 50%," Ipsos wrote in its commentary.
  • "Danuse Nerudova and Petr Pavel would receive the votes of the supporters of the governing coalition parties. Both candidates have more support among voters with higher education, while Danuse Nerudova has strong support among the youngest generation."
  • The survey also measured the electoral potential of each candidate, with hesitant voters asked to name their preferences. Pavel has the largest electoral potential of 38.3%, with Nerudova coming second with 37.1% and Babis third with 35.7%.
