Baltic Gas Demand Fell 61% YoY In October

NATURAL GAS

Gas consumption in the four Baltic states fell by 61% year on year in October, according to Connexus Baltic Grid, Amber Grid and Gasgrid Finland.

  • Gas consumption in the region totalled 1.59TWh in October, down by 61% on the year.
  • Adjusted for temperatures, October consumption was still well below that a year earlier as demand has been less responsive to weather.
  • Reasons for a decline in gas consumption varied by country.
  • Efforts to substitute gas with alternative fuels for heating in Estonia and Lithuania have weighed on the countries’ gas consumption and could leave gas demand this year lower than last winter.
  • In Lithuania, gas consumption is largely driven by industrial consumers, especially ammonia producer Achema. The company announced in late October to resume production, after spikes in gas prices have forced the producer to reduce capacity earlier this year.
  • This week, Estonian TSO Elering said gas supply should not pose a problem for the region this winter, because of the commissioning of a new FLNG terminal in Finland.
