BBG: Iran Says 'No Major Obstacles' To Reviving Nuclear Deal

Bloomberg and social media reporting comments from the Iranian gov't stating that there are 'no major obstacles' to reviving the nuclear deal, and that this should be done before the end of the Rouhani gov't.

  • Iran holds presidential elections on 18 June (and if required a second-round run-off on 25 June) to decide who will succeed incumbent President Hassan Rouhani.
  • Given the small list of approved candidates for the presidency, it seems likely the next president will hail from the hard-line conservative wing of Iranian politics, compared to Rouhani, who governed as a moderate reformist.
  • As such, it is likely to prove imperative to have a deal in place by the time Rouhani leaves gov't in August as the incoming administration is unlikely to be willing to offer the same kind of concessions to the West to reach an agreement.
