Kitty Donaldson at Bloomberg tweets: "The executive of the 1922 committee of backbench Tory MPs has been in en masse to see Prime Minister Boris Johnson"

  • The 1922 Committee is a group formed by backbench (non-gov't office holding) Conservative MPs. In recent days there have been rumours that some disgruntled Conservative MPs have already or are considering sumbitting letters of no confidence in the PM following weeks of terrible headlines and declining poll numbers for the PM and party.
  • The prospect of an all-out leadership challenge remains slim in the short term, given that despite the numerous issues facing the PM the Conservatives' polling numbers remain around the same level as Labour's. There is also a dearth of viable candidates to replace the PM on the Conservative benches at present, with the PM still viewed as crucial to holding onto Conservative support in northern England.
  • Should a challenge emerge, Chancellor Rishi Sunak and Foreign Secretary Liz Truss would be viewed as the two frontrunners.
