BCCh Decision Due Tomorrow, First Protests For Boric

  • The Chile central bank will meet on March 29 and at present the median surveyed estimate expects the BCCh to hike rates by 175bps to 7.25%, however the modal estimate is for an even larger hike of the overnight rate to 7.5%. The full MNI preview will be published later today.
  • Thousands of students marched through the Chilean capital on Friday demanding higher food stipends, the first organized demonstration under newly elected President and former protest leader Gabriel Boric.
    • Although the protest was mostly peaceful, police fired water cannons, and hooded agitators clad in black set street fires and vandalized bus stops. They also attacked a Chilean Air Force pick-up truck stuck in traffic with rocks and metal pipes. The government confirmed that three air force officials were injured and treated in a hospital.   • A proposal to ban private ownership of natural resources in the biggest copper-producing nation fell short of the two-thirds majority required to make it into Chile’s new constitution. (BBG)
