Belarus Won’t Join War in Ukraine Despite “Joint Force” Military Drills

  • The president of Belarus insists he won’t join Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine even as thousands of Russian troops are pouring back into his country, Bloomberg report. Several thousand Russian servicemen are arriving in Belarus as part of a “joint force” that Putin and Belarusian President Lukashenko agreed to deploy. They’re due to carry out live fire and missile drills in eastern and central Belarus.
  • Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg report that Turkey has asked Russia to build its second nuclear power plant, in the latest sign of closer ties with the Kremlin. President Erdogan made the request in talks last week in Kazakhstan with Russian counterpart Putin. Russian state nuclear giant Rosatom said Wednesday that talks are underway on a possible deal to build a new, four-reactor plant on the Black Sea coast with CEO Alexey Likhachev saying the project is an “attractive opportunity.”
  • Elsewhere, the Bank of Russia will report the weekly change in its monetary base at 0900BST/1100 local time. There are no speakers scheduled today.
