OIL PRODUCTS
Belgium has approved new rules to suspend the export of low-quality motor fuels to West Africa the government said May 23 according to Platts reports.
- The new standards will be brought in line with European standards.
- Fuels have been exported with a sulfur content as high as 1,500 ppm, well above European standards, while new measures will cap sulfur at 50ppm, benzene at 1% and manganese at 2 mg/liter Platts reports.
- It will come into effect three months after the decree is signed this week.
- It mirrors standards imposed by the Netherlands last April.
- "For far too long, toxic fuels have been departing from Belgium to destinations, including Africa. They cause extremely poor air quality in countries such as Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon, and are even carcinogenic," Belgian Minister of Environment Zakia Khattabi said.
