Biden Applies Pressure On GOP, Urges Congress To Pass Ukraine Funding

US

US President Joe Biden has delivered remarks at the White House urging Congress to pass supplemental funding for Ukraine. It is Biden's first use of his bully pulpit to urge action on Ukraine amid partisan squabbling in Congress over US-Mexico border policy which is threatening to derail the entire supplemental funding package, which also includes funds for Israel, Taiwan, and other national security priorities abroad.

  • Biden: "Congress needs to pass supplemental funding before they break for the holiday recess. It's as simple as that."
  • Biden continues: "I think it's stunning that we've gotten to this point... Republicans in Congress are willing to give Putin the greatest gift he could hope for and abandon our global leadership... Who is prepared to walk away from holding Putin accountable for this behaviour?"
  • Biden: "I just did a meeting with the G7," and says that Europe is prepared to "stay with Ukraine." Biden asks: "Who in the United States is willing to walk away from that? I tell you, I'm not prepared to walk away and I don't think the American people are either."
  • Biden: "If Putin takes Ukraine he won't stop there... if he attacks a NATO ally... then we'll have something that we don't seek and that we don't have today... American troops fighting Russian troops."
  • On today's Senate vote which Republicans are expected to block, Biden says: "Make no mistake, today's vote will be long remembered and history's gonna judge harshly those who turn their backs on freedom's cause. We can't let Putin win."
