Biden Challenges McCarthy To Release Republican Budget Ahead Of WH Meeting

US

The White House has issued a memo to the office of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) challenging the Republican leader to release a budget proposal outlining House GOP spending plans ahead of a key White House meeting tomorrow.

  • The memo, written by White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deese and Office of Management and Budget Director Shalanda Young says, “at Wednesday’s meeting, President Biden will pose two questions to Speaker McCarthy.”
  • Firstly, the memo states that, “President Biden will ask Speaker McCarthy to publicly assure the American people and the rest of the world that the United States will, as always, honor all of its financial obligations."
  • Secondly, the memo states that Biden will release his budget on March 9 and McCarthy must do likewise, “so that the American people can see how House Republicans plan to reduce the deficit,” and whether cuts will be made to Social Security, Medicare, or other government programs.
  • McCarthy responded on Twitter: "Mr. President: I received your staff’s memo. I’m not interested in political games. I’m coming to negotiate for the American people."
