Biden "Documents" Case Provides Political Capital For GOP Investigations

US

The evolving story that President Biden improperly stored government documents dating from his time as vice president during the administration of former president Barrack Obama has continued to dominate the US political news cycle today.

  • Rep James Comer (R-TN), Chair of the House Oversight Committee, said on Fox News: "Has the Department of Justice not been transparent with the American people? We're supposed to get a briefing. The National Archives should have briefed me and the chairman of the House Oversight Committee. That is their responsibility."
  • The story will power a GOP talking point that the Biden administration has "weaponised" the Department of Justice by pursing investigations into former President Donald Trump.
  • With the GOP in control of the House of Representatives, Comer has subpoena powers via the Oversight Committee and has stated an intention to use them to probe President Biden's administration and members of his family. Comer has said directly: “This is an investigation of Joe Biden."
  • House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said at a press conference: "Where are the photos of Biden’s documents. This is what makes Americans not trust their government," adding "I think Congress has to investigate this."
