Wires reporting comments from US President Joe Biden at the G7 summit in Italy stating that he "hasn't lost hope" for a Gaza ceasefire, but "Hamas has to move."
- Reuters notes: "Asked if he was confident [about a ceasefire], Biden said, "No. Hamas has to move."
- The WH pooler reports: "When asked if he's confident they will get a deal soon, he said 'No,' adding 'I haven't lost hope.'"
- Comes as WH officials apply pressure on Hamas to accept the three-phase proposal outlined by Biden on May 31. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan both told reporters yesterday, “the time for haggling is over” after receiving the group’s response to the proposal, which included a number of new demands.
- Gershon Baskin, a former Israeli non-governmental negotiator with Hamas, said on X: “The main problem is the huge gap between the parties. Hamas is not ready for a deal without ending the war, and the Netanyahu government is not ready for a deal that ends the war.”
- Separately, French President Emmanuel Macron said: "Agreed to set up trilateral with Israel, US, France to discuss roadmap to defuse tensions between Hezbollah and Israel." A response to a significant up tick in tensions between Israel and Lebanon-based Hezbollah this week.
- NYT reports: "Hezbollah fired one of its heaviest rocket barrages yet into Israel on Wednesday, targeting military bases and an arms factory, in response to an overnight strike that killed one of its senior commanders..."
