Biden: Israel And Hamas Have Agreed To Gaza Ceasefire Framework
US President Joe Biden has issued a statement on social mediaclaiming that Israel and Hamas have both agreed to the three-phrase Gaza ceasefire-for-hostage framework that he outlined in a White House speech on May 31.
- Biden: "Six weeks ago I laid out a comprehensive framework for how to achieve a ceasefire and bring the hostages home. There is still work to do and these are complex issues, but that framework is now agreed to by both Israel and Hamas. My team is making progress and I'm determined to get this done."
- This week has seen some of the most intensive diplomacy of recent months to get an agreement over the line. US/Israeli/Egyptian/Qatari officials have held multiple meetings in Cairo/Tel Aviv/Doha to reach a compromise - although the prospect of a deal has looked at risk due to pressure from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's right flank.
- The Time of Israel reports in the last hour: "The framework for a Gaza ceasefire deal that would see the Palestinian enclave governed by neither Hamas nor Israel has reportedly been agreed by both parties," but cautions that, "a final agreement "is not imminent,” given the complexity of the remaining elements of the plan."
- Michelle Nichol at Reuters reports: "Israeli and Egyptian ceasefire negotiators are in talks about an electronic surveillance system along the border between Gaza and Egypt that could allow Israel to pull back its troops from the area if a ceasefire is agreed, according to [sources]."
