Biden Issues Statement In Support Of Cuba Protesters

US President Joe Biden has released a statement stating the US gov'ts support for the protesters in Cuba, who embarked on the biggest anti-gov't protests since the Cuban revolution in the 1950s to oppose the gov'ts handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, call for better healthcare and education, and demand liberalising reforms.

  • The protests are the largest seen in decades and have resulted in a defensive stance being taken by the country's communist gov't under the control of President Miguel Diaz-Canal, who has blamed Cuba's economic woes on US sanctions.
  • Earlier today, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called US sanctions on Cuba 'unjust', potentially opening another rift between the Mexican and US gov'ts, a relationship that remains strained due to significant migrant flows reaching the US' southern border in recent months.
