Biden: Officials Will Meet To Discuss Issues With China

US President Joe Biden has delivered remarks in Bali, Indonesia following a three-hour-long bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

  • Biden said: "We had an open and candidate conversation about our intentions and our priorities," and said Xi was "neither more confrontation or more conciliatory."
  • Biden: "We're going to compete vigorously, but I'm not looking for conflict."
  • On Taiwan, Biden said, "One-China policy has not changed," but he remains committed to upholding a rules based order in the region.
  • Biden indicated that he believes that Washington and Beijing can effectively manage tensions after an extended period of diplomatic strain which followed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) CODEL to Taiwan in July.
    • Biden said that high-level officials will meet to discuss "a lot of issues."
  • On Ukraine, Biden said they, "discussed Russia's aggression against Ukraine," and agreed "threat of nuclear weapons is totally unacceptable."
  • Biden said, "I asked that Secretary [of State Antony] Blinken travel to China..." to follow up on the bilat.
  • Biden also gave brief remarks on the US midterms, saying the elections demonstrated a "deep and unwavering commitment in America to persevering and defending democracy."
