Biden: Russian Energy Imports Not In India's Best Interests

WHITE HOUSE

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has taken questions on the bilateral meeting today between the White House, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Indian officials.

  • Psaki says that Russian energy imports aren't banned and don't violate US sanctions. She says 'the President made clear America would be happy to help India diversify energy imports' and Biden also told the India delegation that it isn't in India's interest to accelerate Russian energy imports.
  • Psaki declines to answer whether or not Biden received a commitment from Prime Minister Modi on Russian energy.
  • From the tone of the presser it appears that little progress was made in the bilateral meeting on pushing India to take a more assertive stance condemning Russia or moving away from the close economic relationship with Moscow.
