President Biden is expected to announce a new set of executive orders on border security this week. AP notes that mayors from border towns will travel to Washington for an event on Tuesday, supporting reporting that the announcement is likely to take place before Biden departs for France on Wednesday.
- A White House spokesperson said: “The Administration continues to explore a series of policy options, and we remain committed to taking action to address our broken immigration system.”
- The Hill reports that the executive orders would allow Biden to “shut down” the US-Mexico border when there’s a significant daily surge in migrants.
- House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told Fox News the actions were “too little, too late.” Johnson said: “He’s trying to desperately show the American people that he wants to address the issue that he himself created.”
- Polls continue to indicate that border security is one of Biden's major vulnerabilities but concerns over immigration receded slightly in May after toping the list of most important problems January, February, March, and April. Gallup notes: "...mentions of [immigration] have fallen nine percentage points since last month," as concerns over the economy increase.
- The exectutive actions may be crucial for Biden to minimise exposure to the issue during the first presidential debate on June 27 where former President Donald Trump is exected to advocate for a hardline set of border policies.
