Biden To Discuss National Security Supplemental With Congressional Leaders

US

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean Pierre has told reporters that President Biden will tomorrow meet with Congressional leaders from the Senate and the House, along with "key committee leaders," to discuss "the critical importance of his national security supplemental request."

  • The USD$110 billion funding request, which includes around USD$60bln for Ukraine, USD$10bln for Israel, and additional funds for Taiwan and the Indo-Pacific has been stalled in Congress since September.
  • Despite a dip in support, there is still broad bipartisan for Biden's supplemental in Congress. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has called on Biden to engage directly with the House GOP to ease passage of an overhaul of US-Mexico border policy, seen as critical to unlocking a vote on the supplemental.
  • The meeting will be Biden's first White House meeting with Congressional leaders since he met Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and former GOP House Speaker Kevin McCarthy in May to discuss averting a federal government default.
  • The meeting comes as Biden's national security advisor Jake Sullivan delivered a speech at Davos today which advocated for greater US involvement in global flashpoints like the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Indo-Pacific.
