Biden To Meet Saudi Crown Prince MBS In June

ENERGY SECURITY

The Washington Post has reported that US President Joe Biden plans to meet the de facto Saudi ruler, Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman in Riyadh in late June, after a stop in Israel to meet with Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.

  • WAPO: 'Two new factors proved decisive for the Biden White House: The first was the war in Ukraine, and Biden’s need for Saudi help in buffering the oil market; the second was Israel’s strong desire that Biden normalize relations with MBS and the kingdom as part of a broad realignment whose shorthand is the Abraham Accords.'
  • If the meeting goes ahead it will be the most significant diplomatic concession made by the Biden administration in attempts to cool energy prices and tackle inflation.
  • One of the first act Biden's presidency was to scale back the bilateral relationship between Washington and Riyadh in response to the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
