Biden To Meet Stoltenberg Amid Mixed Reports Of Ukraine Counteroffensive

President Biden is scheduled to meet with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House in around one hour.

  • The meeting comes amid speculation over who may replace Stoltenberg when he completes his term in October. Stoltenberg has extended his mandate three times since taking office in 2014 and, although he has stated his intention to step down, it is possible he may may be asked to stay temporarily due to a lack of an obvious replacement.
  • Biden has so far been non-committal about either of the two frontrunners, Danish PM Mette Fredericksen and UK Defence Minister Ben Wallace.
  • The prevailing wisdom is that the ideal candidate would be a female head of state or highly qualified government official from Central/Eastern Europe.
  • The two leaders will also discuss the upcoming NATO Summit in Vilnius where allies of Ukraine are expected to announce a significant new package of aid for Kyiv.
  • The meeting also comes amid mixed reports of the early effectiveness of the Ukrainian counteroffensive. US officials have cautioned against reading too much into early operations.
